My Grandmother, My Hero

Most of my earliest memories involve my paternal grandmother. I remember pulling a chair away from the kitchen table to sit across the counter from her so that I could watch her make the pan of biscuits or the cake that I knew would taste so good. I always attribute my love of cooking to these times with her.

My paternal grandparents owned a farm in eastern North Carolina with their two sons, my dad and his younger brother. My grandmother still lives on this property though a lot of it has been sold back to the state because of the riverfront nature of the property and the efforts the state is taking to preserve the wetlands in eastern NC.

We lived next door to her in a house that my parents built and moved into right before I was born. I was the first grandchild of two in that family and my grandmother kept me when my mom had to go to work or otherwise leave the house so I spent a lot of time with her.

My parents still own this house and rent it out because they don't feel like it would be fair to her to sell that property while she is still living. My parents have often joked with Matthew and I that they would give this house to us if it were in a better location (we moved away when I was 8 for job opportunities for my dad and to get away from the Marines).

Today, my grandmother is 74 years old. She's still very capable of taking care of herself. She's intelligent and cooks for her self. A couple of years ago, she even wrote a small book about her childhood as a sawmiller's daughter that she gave to us at Christmas that year.

The problem is that she lives very very alone out in the country. My dad is a truck driver and can't get to her quickly if something were to happen and my uncle has a job where he also has to travel somewhat extensively and he would have the same problems getting to her quickly. She's also very lonely. She sits and watches the renters that live so close to her and has detailed reports to give to my dad about them when he calls which sometimes drives him crazy.

A month or two ago, as my mom and I were driving back from a family reunion, she again joked about giving us the house. I told her that grandmama would watch us just like she watched her neighbors now and my parents wouldn't hear the end of it. My mom turned to me and told me that no, she wouldn't, because it was me. And, somehow, that hit home. She was right. My grandmother would never admit that I could do anything wrong (*preen*).

I went home and talked to Matthew about it. We've discussed it many times since then and I just can't get the idea out of my head. I feel like I'm being told, not by my parents and not by Matthew, that it is my duty to take care of her and to be there to help her should she need it. I've mentioned this casually to my mom and she told me a bit about what kind of land came with the house (we need a bit for farm animals and gardens and things so that we can be self-sufficient). I haven't really seriously talked to my parents about it yet and I certainly haven't told my grandmother yet because we aren't sure how long it will take before it can happen. But, I think this is what will happen.

It's not what we planned at first but it seems like the right move. Now to get all the details worked out...

January 28 and January 29, 2008

The good:

Monday:

Finally got Matthew's truck fixed.

That means I don't have to get up at 4AM on the days that I have to go in at 10:00AM and stay until 6:30PM and he doesn't have to work from 6:00AM until 7:00PM when I can finally come pick it up. We are also saving $250 on a fine from the NC DMV because we didn't get it inspected when it was due because it wasn't working. But, all appears to be working just fine now and it only cost us $350.00 and we didn't have to miss any work to get it done.

Tuesday:

IT at work got my database working on my boss' computer. Apparently, my switch syntax in my shortcut target was backwards. Hopefully, next time I'm asked to do one, I'll get it right the first time.

I also got approved for a vacation day on Friday. Dunno if we'll go anywhere but a day off work is a good day :P

The bad:

Monday and Tuesday:

I have a feeling this is going to be a lazy week with the way things are going so far. I'm trying to keep positive and make myself stay on track as much as I can. I'm still eating fairly healthily and I'm still down to one soda a day.

Tuesday:

I apparently lost a line in my Excel spreadsheet that I keep my Leave of Absence information in at work. Just as my boss was hanging up with someone who's been on leave for a while, I realized that this person was due back to work yesterday or she would be terminated. (Our company only allows you to take 12 weeks of leave time in any rolling 12-month period (which is what is protected by the government). If you take more you are terminated but eligible for rehire in 12 months). My boss hung up the phone and walked away before I could tell her but we got it all straightened out in the end. I felt like a big idiot. I don't normally lose track of things like that.

The funny:

Here are a few excerpts from my day at work Tuesday:

A lady came up to me to find out about her wage increase. She had her last paystub from 2007 with a payrate of 13.30/hour and her latest paystub with a payrate of 13.90/hour. (The company I work for gives 0.60 increases every six months for hourly employees). I asked her what her question was.

H: I didn't get the right amount. I should be at like 14.20.
M: It...looks fine to me.
H: No, I only got 0.30.
M: *boggles* You got 0.60. *points to her Excel file*
H: No, it's 0.30 *starts getting louder*
M: 13.30 + 0.30 = 13. 60...13.30+0.60 = 13.90...13.30+0.90 = 14.20
H: *Thanks me, apologizes, and walks away*

About an hour later, a gentleman came up to me to ask me a question about his safety glasses (all employees that go out on the manufacturing floor have to be wearing approved safety glasses. If you have a prescription for eyeglasses, the company will pay a portion for prescription safety glasses once per year or so).

H: Who do I see to get the slip for prescription glasses?
M: Safety, they are...*gets cut off*
H: No, I mean...*points to his safety glasses complete with side shields*
M: You mean safety glasses?
H: Yes.
M: Safety.

People were crazy like this today but everyone was pleasant and cheerful yesterday...even the ones who came up to get their uniforms.

Falling off the Wagon

The latter part of last week was a total loss, pretty much. No cleaning really got done, at least on my part. We ate out Friday and Sunday. And, I was out of town all day Saturday at a family gathering.

The only things that did get accomplished were:
  • Matthew washed both dogs and did all the laundry and a bunch of dishes while I was gone on Saturday
  • Baked four loaves of bread on Sunday
  • Took the truck in so that it can be fixed this week
  • Got most of the Christmas decorations taken down and put in the shed.
This week is probably going to be another bad week for staying on track. I have the weird 10AM to 6:30PM work schedule Monday through Wednesday and that won't leave a lot of time for doing anything once we get home. I am going to continue the same goals I've had for the past two weeks (in fact, I'm going to continue them until we get them accomplished every day during the week and then add something to them).

January 24, 2008

Goals for This Week

  1. Eat at home every day this week.
    • First day of being on the eating at home wagon.
  2. Only drink one soda per day.
    • Have gone five days drinking only one soda. I did have to stop and get a soda today. I had a terrible headache on the way home. Even after a huge cup of coffee and a huge cup of tea. What in diet soda is addictive other than the caffeine? There *has* to be something.
  3. Do FlyLady Daily Mission
    • The mission today was to clean off the nightstand. I didn't do this because I was lazy after cooking and eating dinner.
What Did I Accomplish Today?

Home
Made myself cook dinner even though I didn't want to.

Work
Almost finished the Access database I am building.

What Could Have Gone Better?

Home
No exercise done today. No FlyLady mission done today. Didn't even swap out the dishwasher.

Work
Need to get some filing done. Paperwork is building up again because of the big Access project. Uniforms are coming on Friday which means Wonky Work Schedule next Monday through Wednesday.

  4. Put together new computers so I can clean up and give my old one to my mom (and get her addicted to WoW).
  5. Need to find out if Becky has had her foal so we can go visit :D

January 23, 2008

Goals for This Week

  1. Eat at home every day this week.
    • Ate at Cracker Barrel tonight. My excuse is that traffic was bad and we were going to visit my parents after work but that doesn't give us back an accomplished goal.
  2. Only drink one soda per day.
    • Have gone four days drinking only one soda. No soda today!
  3. Do FlyLady Daily Mission
    • The mission today was to clean out the bottom of the bedroom closet. We got home too late from visiting to do this.
What Did I Accomplish Today?

Home
Still a couple of big dishes to get caught up (crock pot crocks and some new cast iron pots and pans) but the rest are clean and we're keeping it that way. Got the garbage collected from all the rooms and taken out to the curb. Went to visit my parents since I knew my dad was home and I hadn't seen him in a couple weeks. Found out the family reunion for January is going to be this coming Saturday.

Work
Continued progress on the Access database I am building.

  • Got 7/10 arena games done for this week. I think we ended up winning 3 of those games which is great for our team (we don't have an optimal group makeup and we are still learning how to pvp together as a team (and some of us individually...namely me)) for a Wednesday night when more of the hardcore and higher level teams are playing.

RIP Heath Ledger

Yesterday, Heath Ledger was found dead in an apartment in Manhattan. I think the whole world is shocked by the death of this young, talented actor. I know I was. I hope that his death was a tragic accident rather than a suicide given the success of his career and his young daughter, Matilda.

This morning, as I was perusing the internet, I came across this rumor. Things like this make me absolutely sick. How can any group label itself as Christian or family-oriented and protest at anyone's funeral? This is a time for Heath's family and friends to grieve and remember their friend, son, brother, father, etc. Yet, now, it looks like they will be burdened by a "church" telling them how evil he was for a movie role and trying to further their warped political agenda in the face of their sadness.

My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time and I hope that they can overcome the extra grief that this protest will cause.

I will forever remember Heath Ledger dancing along the bleachers and singing in 10 Things I Hate About You.

  3. Do FlyLady Daily Mission

What Did I Accomplish Today?

Home
Matthew had to work late so I waited for him in the parking lot and I did my sketch project for January. Which you can see to the left. It's not perfect by any means. But, it's something.

Work
Got caught up on 80% of my paperwork and I didn't murder anyone. So, all-in-all, a good day :P

What Could Have Gone Better?

Home
No exercise done today. No FlyLady mission done today. Didn't even cook at home -- we went out. Lazy lazy lazy.

Work
Still didn't get to the database. Had intentionally planned to stay late and make up time from Thursday. But, by 3PM, I'd already had more than enough.

Today's Menu

Breakfast
Homemade Instant Oatmeal

Lunch
6" Tuna on Wheat (cheese, lettuce, tomato and cucumber with a bit of mayonnaise) and Garden Salsa Sunchips from Subway

Dinner
3 Pc Dark meat meal (with potato wedges and a biscuit) and a half Baja Blast and half Diet Mountain Dew. I'm starting to notice that food I don't prepare myself is somewhat greasy and nasty...

Snacks
Apple Wheat Muffin, homemade yogurt with black cherries and honey, homemade brownie, 1 Kashi Granola Bar

How Do You Feel?
  1. Much better than yesterday but still disgruntled.
Fun Stuff!

Reading
  • Read a partial chapter of Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham and none of A Witch's Bible by Janet and Stewart Farrar today.
World of Warcraft
  • Tonight was Kara. I was off-tank and we downed Moroes, Maiden and Opera (Oz). We got in one attempt on Curator but I was too tired to continue so I let someone else have my slot. We had an awesome group. 2 Priests and a Resto shaman to heal. 2 Mages, 2 Warlocks and a Rogue for DPS.
Things to Think About:
  1. Finish family recipe site.
  2. Registering our old business URL so that we have it for any possible future needs.
  3. Need to think of a cake decorating for January.
  4. Put together new computers so I can clean up and give my old one to my mom (and get her addicted to WoW).
  5. Need to find out when/if we are having a family reunion in January. Called my mom about this and she didn't know. Said she would find out this weekend.

    • Have gone eleven days drinking only one soda. I had no soda at all! Yay! But, I did have two big cups of coffee.
  3. Do FlyLady Daily Mission
    • The mission today was to scrub the bathroom sink. I did this mission as well as the mission from Wednesday in the bathroom. I did not get to the other room.
What Did I Accomplish Today?

Home
Got caught up on dishes and on FlyLady missions. Wish I could have done more but I was in a very very foul mood.

Work
I just didn't go. I had a headache in the morning and I needed a mental health day.

What Could Have Gone Better?

Home
No exercise done today. FlyLady mission half accomplished.

Work
See above.

Today's Menu

Breakfast
Homemade Instant Oatmeal

Lunch
Peanut Butter Cookies

Dinner
Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, Salad Bar and a couple of (OLD) fries. From Ruby Tuesday. (Ruby Tuesday is trying to present itself as way too upscale nowadays. It's quite hard to eat a sandwich covered in wing sauce on a hard roll on a narrow, long rectangular plate. Casual food should be casually served. Don't make it fancy because it makes me make a mess. *Rant over*) This was still within our weekly cash budget, by the way.

Snacks
I think there was pudding.

How Do You Feel?
  1. Generally ticked off. I'm not sure why. I think it's a combination of the schedule I worked Wednesday and feeling like I have no scheduling flexibility at my job. I asked my boss about an alternative schedule that should have been win/win for everyone but was ignored. I'm ready for a change. Very ready. But, I still feel somewhat trapped with only one vehicle. Hopefully something will present itself soon.

  1. Eat at home every day this week.
    • This is our twelfth day of eating at home (or within our weekly cash allowance).
  2. Only drink one soda per day.
    • Have gone ten days drinking only one soda. Today was a tough one because of the Wonky Work Schedule.
  3. Do FlyLady Daily Mission
    • The mission today was to clean out the medicine cabinets in each bathroom and wipe down the shelves. Sadly, we did not get to this tonight. By the time dinner was made and all the daily chores are done, it will be time to go to bed. I'm trying really hard not to beat myself up about a little setback. I will not get discouraged. I will not get discouraged. I will not get...
What Did I Accomplish Today?

3/4 goals completed. Trash collected and taken to the curb. Not much else to note.

  2. Registering our old business URL so that we have it for any possible future needs.
  3. Need to think of a cake decorating and sketching project for January.
  4. Put together new computers so I can clean up and give my old one to my mom (and get her addicted to WoW).
  5. Need to find out when/if we are having a family reunion in January.
  6. Need to find out if Becky has had her foal so we can go visit :D

January 15, 2008

Goals for This Week
  1. Eat at home every day this week.
    • This is our eleventh day of eating at home (or within our weekly cash allowance).
  2. Only drink one soda per day.
    • Have gone nine days drinking only one soda.
  3. Do FlyLady Daily Mission
    • The mission today was to scrub out the trash can in the bathroom and also to get rid of 27 things in the room of your choice. We scrubbed out the trash cans in our own bathrooms and we took all the ornaments off the Christmas tree and packed them and our wreaths away. (Maybe not what FlyLady had in mind but it was a lot of stuff out of the living room :P)
What Did I Accomplish Today?

Home
All goals accomplished! Cooked a big pan of what can only be described as beefaroni for our lunches for the rest of this week. Got the groceries a day early since I'm having to work late Wednesday and Thursday. Came in $25.00 under our grocery budget for this 2 week period and found 5lb bags of taters for $0.99 a bag! O.O

Work
The lawyer told us we didn't have to go to court today. I suppose we'll hear back from him in the next few days. Still catching up on paperwork. Got my weekly report done.

What Could Have Gone Better?

Home
No exercise done today but other than that am pretty happy with what was accomplished.

Work
It was freaking cold in the office today. Wished I'd had a heater.

Today's Menu

Breakfast
Homemade Instant Oatmeal

Lunch
Black Bean Soup and a Little Debbie 100 Calorie Brownie

Dinner
Beef Nachos from Las Margaritas in Garner

Snacks
Apple Wheat Muffin, 1 Kashi Granola Bar

How Do You Feel?
  1. Ok but COLD!
  2. My arm hardly hurts at all :)
Fun Stuff!

Reading
  • Read one chapter of Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham and half a chapter of A Witch's Bible by Janet and Stewart Farrar today. I'm reading the latter in the cafeteria at work since I come in at 6:30AM and shouldn't be clocking in until closer to 8:00AM. However, this morning, even though the cafeteria was empty, some man and a woman sat down directly behind me and he started talking to her in this huge, booming voice so I came to my desk to read the internets.
World of Warcraft
  • Wasn't going to play tonight because it was late when we got home from getting groceries and getting all the cooking and cleaning done but we were called in for the Gruul's Lair raid. King Maulgar was laid to rest after about 5 attempts with only 22 people.
Things to Think About:
  1. Finish family recipe site.
  2. Registering our old business URL so that we have it for any possible future needs.
  3. Need to think of a cake decorating and sketching project for January.
  4. Put together new computers so I can clean up and give my old one to my mom (and get her addicted to WoW).

January 14, 2008

Goals for This Week
  1. Eat at home every day this week.
    • This is our tenth day of eating at home.
  2. Only drink one soda per day.
    • Have gone eight days drinking only one soda.
  3. Do FlyLady Daily Mission
    • The mission today was to clean out around the base of the toilet in the main bathroom and also clean out the obvious trash from a room of your choosing. Matthew and I both cleaned our own toilets (separate bathrooms = happy marriage...seriously) and he took care of some trash in our office.
What Did I Accomplish Today?

Home
All goals accomplished! Yay! Also did some cooking for the week that I didn't get to this weekend. I made brownies, apple wheat muffins and some homemade instant oatmeal. Also got our new homesteading blog up and running. We used to have it at LiveJournal but I like the format of Blogspot/Blogger much much better. You can find our new blog at http://rootsfinding.blogspot.com/.

Work
Got caught up on some paperwork that I had gotten behind on with all the projects last week.

What Could Have Gone Better?

Home
I wish I had been able to work in some exercise and also some decluttering. But, all missions were accomplished, so I'm happy.

Work
I got lazy working on some FMLA paperwork. It should have been finished before I left but, alas, it wasn't. Also, I have to get to the Access database that my boss requested. Hopefully by the end of the week I'll have some time for that (though, I do have uniforms coming in on Wednesday...*sigh*)

Today's Menu

Breakfast
Homemade Instant Oatmeal

Lunch
Black Bean Soup and a Little Debbie 100 Calorie Brownie

Dinner
Pork Chops with Barbecue Sauce, Corn, Lima Beans and Homemade Biscuits (I shaped half of my biscuit dough and put it in the freezer. I'm anxious to see how it comes out compared to the commercial frozen biscuits).

Snacks
Apple Wheat Muffin, Homemade Yogurt with Strawberry Jam, Honey & Kashi Go Lean, 2 Kashi Granola Bars

How Do You Feel?
  1. I feel pretty darn good today :)
  2. My left arm still hurts intermittently. But, far less frequently and far less painful. Yay! Not carpal tunnel syndrome!
Fun Stuff!

Reading
  • Read one chapter of Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham and two chapters of A Witch's Bible by Janet and Stewart Farrar today.
Movies
  • Watched about 1/2 of Mr. Bean's Holiday. It's silly, as you'd expect a Mr. Bean movie to be. Other than that, I'm kind of ambivalent about it ;)
Things to Think About:
  1. Finish family recipe site.
  2. Registering our old business URL so that we have it for any possible future needs.
  3. Need to think of a cake decorating and sketching project for January.
  4. Put together new computers so I can clean up and give my old one to my mom (and get her addicted to WoW).
  5. Need to finalize menus and grocery list for Wednesday.
  6. Need to find out when/if we are having a family reunion in January.

January 13, 2008

Goals for This Week
  1. Eat at home every day this week.
    • This is our ninth day of eating at home.

  3. Do FlyLady Daily Mission
    • No mission today. They run Monday through Friday!
What Did I Accomplish Today?

Home
Did not get much accomplished at all. Still one load behind on dishes. Got the family recipe site started.

What Could Have Gone Better?

Home
Did not get much accomplished at all. Oh wait, I said that already...hehe. I'd make excuses about the new schedule and lack of caffeine but the reality is that I'm just lazy.

Today's Menu

Breakfast
Waffles and Sausage

Hamburger Steak and Mac & Cheese

Dinner
White Pizza with Shrimp and Garlic

Snacks
Coffee

Week Beginning January 13, 2008

Goals for This Week
  1. Eat at home every day this week.
  2. Only drink one soda per day until the soda runs out, then stop.
  3. Do FlyLady daily mission.
Thoughts for This Week

  1. I think this is going to be a hard week. We're going to be on the Wonky Uniform Week schedule (normally 10:00AM to 6:30PM but, since Matthew has to start work at 6:00AM, it looks like I may be working 6:30AM to 6:30PM...ugh)
  2. We still don't know if we will have to go to court on Tuesday. Apparently, in November (November 13, to be exact, a school bus driver made a formal complaint that we passed her while she was stopped at 6:50AM right before we turn off of Cleveland School Road). A State Trooper came out to our house on December 8 and assigned Matthew a court date, which is Tuesday. He contacted a lawyer last week and sent in a statement but we have yet to hear back from him about what we should do on Tuesday.

January 12, 2008

Goals for This Week
  1. Eat at home every day this week.
    • This is our eighth day of eating at home even though Matthew had a really bad day at work and wanted to go out to eat. I'm not giving up my zoo trip that easily.
  2. Only drink one soda per day.
    • Have gone six days drinking only one soda.
What Did I Accomplish Today?

Home
Caught up on some much needed sleep. Started putting the family recipe site online.

What Could Have Gone Better?

Home
Did not do any cleaning or planned projects (i.e., putting away the Christmas decorations).

Today's Menu

Breakfast
Waffles and Sausage

Lunch
Slept through lunch

Dinner
Cheese Tortellini with Pesto Sauce and a Caesar Salad from La Piazza (this was my Christmas gift from my brother)

Snacks
Coffee, Milk, 2 100 Calorie Little Debbie Nutty Bars

How Do You Feel?
  1. So very very tired.
  2. My left arm still hurts. Still hoping it's a pinched nerve as Matthew keeps insisting.
Fun Stuff!

Reading
  • Have not ready many pages in either Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham or A Witch's Bible by Janet and Stewart Farrar today. Have been too sleepy to read for very long.
World of Warcraft
  • My warrior, who has been on my account for at least two years, is finally level 40 and has Mortal Strike and her horse mount. Yay!
Dresden Dolls Concert
  • The tickets to this was my Christmas gift to my brother. We had a great great time. The show was awesome. The band performed a couple of covers (something from Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Beastie Boys' Fight for Your Right to Party and a Led Zepplin medley at the end).

Crappy cell phone pics can be found here.

Goals for This Week
  1. Eat at home every day this week.

  2. Only drink one soda per day.
    • Have gone five days drinking only one soda.
What Did I Accomplish Today?

Home
Started the blog I've been planning in my head for a few days. Did fifteen minutes of decluttering in the kitchen plus the FlyLady Super Fling Challenge for today.

Work
Sent out the monthly HR reports and caught up on some paperwork that had backed up yesterday.

What Could Have Gone Better?

Home
Did not do any dishes at all. They are starting to pile up a bit.

Work
My proposal is delayed until April when the fiscal year resets.

Today's Menu

Breakfast
Homemade Instant Oatmeal

Lunch
Blackened Chicken Salad and Apple Juice

Dinner
Meatball Sub Sandwiches and Macaroni & Cheese

Snacks
Bojangles Sausage Biscuit (was delivered by a vendor and was free), Kashi Granola Bar

How Do You Feel?
  1. I've been very tired today. Probably due to the fact that I went to bed at midnight this morning and then got up at 4:10AM. Going to bed in just a bit to sleep out.
  2. My left arm still hurts. Still hoping it's a pinched nerve as Matthew keeps insisting.

  2. Registering our old business URL so that we have it for any possible future needs.
  3. Need to think of a cake decorating and sketching project for January.
  4. Need to get up in the morning and do the belly dancing class I TiVoed off of FitTV and maybe go for a walk.

January 10, 2008

Goals for This Week
  1. Eat at home every day this week.
    • This is our sixth day of eating at home
  2. Only drink one soda per day.
    • Have gone four days drinking only one soda. Have had 2 1/2 liters of water (this is a lot for me).
What Did I Accomplish Today?

Home
I am now only one load behind on dishes and the kitchen is much cleaner than normal. It's much more pleasant to cook in under these circumstances.

Work
Wrote a proposal to change a company policy that could end up saving the company nearly $56,000 per year.

What Could Have Gone Better?

Home
Did not do an extra load of dishes or any extra cleaning.

Work
The proposal took much longer than I expected and other work piled up, untouched, while I worked on the one project.

Today's Menu

Breakfast
Homemade Instant Oatmeal

Lunch
Black Bean Soup and a Little Debbie Brownie (100 Calorie)

Dinner
Meatball Sub Sandwiches and Macaroni & Cheese

Snacks
Apple Wheat Muffin, Homemade Yogurt (with honey, strawberry jam and Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal), Poppy Seed Cake, Kashi Granola Bar

How Do You Feel?
  1. I feel like I've been eating much more than normal this week but the food is healthier and I'm feeling pretty good physically. I have started to notice that I'm not able to eat as much as usual even after just one week of watching what I'm eating.
  2. I've been very tired from the new work schedule and cutting back on sodas.
  3. I've done something to hurt my left arm. When I touch my elbow against a hard surface (especially a corner), a pain shoots up through my arm and makes my hands and wrists numb. I also have random pain in my wrist. This has been going on for a couple of days now.
Fun Stuff!

Reading
  • Finished Spellbinder by Melanie Rawn. I highly recommend this book. It has a strong background of what modern witchcraft really is mixed with a touch of Harry Potter style magic (but in a more adult context).
  • Rereading Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham. I've felt a new interest in religious studies. I'd like to start practicing instead of just reading.
  • Started A Witch's Bible by Janet and Stewart Farrar. Seems very dry so far but I"ll try to keep at it.
World of Warcraft
  • Went to my first Zul'Aman raid tonight with Gorgonzola (Level 70 Tauren Druid - Restoration Spec). We got the bear boss down and some good attempts on the Lynx boss.
Things to Think About:
  1. Putting family recipe site online.
  2. Registering our old business URL so that we have it for any possible future needs.
  3. Need to think of a cake decorating and sketching project for January.

A New Year. A New Blog. (January 2008)

I'm starting this year with a lot of goals and trying to build a more positive outlook on life as a whole. To do this, I plan to use this blog as a chronicle of what I want to do, what I have done and what I could do better so that I may track my progress. I have, until now, been blogging here.

So, without further adieu, I present to you some lists to start out the year.

My New Year's Resolutions
  1. Develop healthier eating habits. Consume foods that have gone through as little processing as possible to keep harmful chemicals out of my body.
  2. Cook at home (eating out can be done but has to be paid for out of my weekly cash allowance).
  3. Declutter and clean the house. We have over seven years worth of clutter and trash, the majority of which must go.
  4. Exercise daily for at least 30 minutes a day.
  5. Stop drinking soda.
January Goals and Progress Thus Far
  1. Get back on FlyLady.
    • Signed up for the mailing list on Sunday, January 6.
    • Have done some work on my Control Journal.
  2. Cook at home or eat out (from weekly cash budget only) the entire month. Reward for this will be a trip to the NC Zoo in early February.
    • This goal started Saturday, January 5.
    • Began cooking on the weekends for the week ahead. This includes making our own lunches, snacks and desserts and making some parts of weekly dinners that take more time than I have on a weeknight.
    • Back to planning two-week menus and shopping for groceries after every payday.
